Frederika Roeder featured on XXVII Valcamonica Symposium 2021 poster.

I am so thrilled to announce that my painting, Chestnut, was chosen for its poster by the XXVII Valcamonica Symposium, 2021 in Capo di Ponte, Valcamonica Italy.
The XXVII Valcamonica Symposium 2021 is a gathering of international experts on prehistoric rock art sites around the world. The Valcamonica Valley located on the Lombardy Plain in Italy has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. It has one of the world's greatest collections of prehistoric petroglyphs – more than 140,000 symbols and figures carved in the rock over a period of 8,000 years and depicting themes connected with agriculture, navigation, war, and magic.
I became familiar with Valcamonica's extraordinary rock art during a self-directed artist's residency at the RUC Rural Residency for Contemporary Art. Directed by Giulia Mazzolani, former assistant to the director at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy for nearly a decade, RUC maintains a partnership with the Valcamonica Center of Prehistoric Studies (Centro Camuno di Studi Preistorici). The two organizations created the poster for the symposium session dedicated to "Archaeology and Aesthetics" with a focus on how the prehistoric rock engravings influence contemporary artists' practices.

While I had read about Valcamonica's rock art, I was not prepared for the visual and emotional intensity of seeing it in person. I can only describe my reaction as "awestruck". It was like being in a Gallery of Nature and sharing a deep spiritual moment with these ancient people. As an artist, the rock art was not only a reminder of the unchanging need of humanity to tell its stories through visual expression - but a reminder of the value of "drawing" in a minimal approach to art.
